I would change the part about “our freedom” in the title: it sounds as if we want to be free to attack Sansal.

In an era in which literature has been reduced to an exercise in self-indulgence (in Italy, literature is nothing but progressive autobiographism), Boualem Sansal has dared, in many novels, to describe a dystopian future where Islam has extinguished every light of reason, lucidly anticipating what many European neighborhoods are already experiencing today.

In a moment of naivety, I had also proposed giving Sansal the Strega Prize, “so at least it would have meant something. The novelist condemned to agony in prison for criticizing Islam, in the most squalid silence of our little writers, the spineless who only stomp their feet at clichés.”

Now the powerful union of writers and the spineless has obtained its most prestigious scalp.

The French president François Hollande, called to testify at the trial for the November 13, 2015 Paris attacks, admitted that the socialist government at the time knew that “operations were being prepared and that individuals had entered the flow of refugees.” This was also confirmed by Jean-Charles Brisard, president of the Center for Terrorism Analysis, to Le Monde: “We knew that terrorists had taken the Balkan route to reach Hungary.”

Between August 30 and October 2, 2015, Salah Abdeslam (the only surviving member of the ISIS commando) allegedly made three round trips between Belgium and Hungary, ferrying numerous terrorists to Brussels.

But when German authorities, in that fateful September, told Angela Merkel that the border could be quickly “sealed,” the chancellor shook her head. A few months earlier, the Hungarian prime minister had given a speech in the village of Kötcse, on the shores of Lake Balaton, while hundreds of thousands of migrants from across the Muslim world, mostly young men, marched from Asia Minor through the Balkans toward the heart of Europe. Groups of migrants had already broken through Hungarian police lines, trampled cultivated fields, occupied squares, blocked highways, stormed trains, and crowded into Budapest’s Keleti station.

What did Orbán say that was so scandalous?

“I am convinced that Hungary has the right—every nation has the right—to say that it does not want its country to change.”

That it does not want to become a no-go zone.

Orbán was thus preparing for the military closure of Hungary’s southern border.

If you do not defend external borders (this is the weakness of so-called “Europeanists”), you will lose control of internal ones.

The day after the Paris massacres, Hollande reinstated border controls in France—just like an Orbán.

If this sounds like The World of Yesterday, it was only ten years ago.

Even a year after the attacks, Jean-Claude Juncker, the Luxembourger leading the European Commission, said that “borders are the worst invention ever.”

Now that the “bad Hungarian” has exited the political scene, more than one person should admit that, at least on this issue, Orbán was right and they were completely wrong. In any case, in these years, despite Merkel and Juncker, Europe has built walls totaling a thousand kilometers along its borders.

A left-wing woman: “Yes, peaceful and diverse, we live in peace.”

Suddenly a guy appears threatening a French man because he is smoking during Ramadan, saying that “it is haram and provocative.”

A scene like this live on TV cannot be invented.

Who would have ever said it? Even George Soros’s Open Society found that “30 percent of Marseille’s population is Muslim” (the report is from 2011, so the data are already old and must be increased).

Amid the usual giggles of commentators and Twitter users, ten years ago Donald Trump shocked the respectable classes by stating that “no-go zones” were emerging in Europe. No-go zones? It must be another Trump fake.

Already David Ignatius in the New York Times had used the expression, explaining that some areas of Paris have become “no-go zones.” Then Michael Nazir-Ali, bishop of Rochester, spoke of “no-go zones” in England. Since then it has become an open secret and even Angela Merkel admitted the existence of this reality in Europe, while former French socialist president François Hollande said: “How can we avoid secession? Because that is what is happening: secession.”

It happens when you think cultures are interchangeable like items of clothing. And secession prevails over the “narrative.”

Italy, as is well known, has “the most beautiful Constitution in the world.” But have you seen Cuba’s Constitution?

Article 1:

“Cuba is a socialist state of workers, organized for the good of all as a democratic republic for the enjoyment of political freedom, social justice, individual and collective well-being, and human solidarity.”

It doesn’t matter if there is nothing democratic about it, if no one enjoys political freedom, or if there is no justice or individual well-being.

And never mind that Fidel Castro had accumulated a personal wealth of 900 million dollars; that Luis Alberto Rodriguez, Raúl Castro’s son-in-law, controls the holding company that manages 75% of the Cuban economy; that Sandro Castro, Fidel’s grandson, controls Havana’s nightlife; that another grandson, Tony Castro, loves luxury yachts; or that Raúl’s granddaughter, Vilma Rodríguez, makes money with Airbnb.

Article 14 of the Cuban Constitution states:

“In the Republic of Cuba, the economic system is based on the socialist ownership by all the people of the fundamental means of production and on the elimination of the exploitation of man by man.”

Here at least it is more honest: “the exploitation of man by man”—as long as the dictator wears a red star on his cap.

Now European communists have come to “save” Cubans from Donald Trump after winning an all-inclusive weekend in a totalitarian Caribbean theme park.
